Fusion Earns Berth Into U.S. Open Cup

The Ventura County Fusion men’s soccer team continues to break new ground.
The Fusion achieved one of its biggest goals of the new season late Saturday when it clinched the first U.S. Open Cup berth in franchise history when the Los Angeles Legends lost to the Ogden Outlaws.
The result means the defending Premier Development League champion will be the lone Southwest Division team entered into the May 31 draw for the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, which will be played June 15.
“We’ve achieved a lot in our first three years of existence, particularly last season,” said Fusion general manager Ranbir Shergill. “This year, we wanted to achieve something we haven’t done yet.
“One of the biggest goals for this season was to get into the Open Cup and bring an MLS team to Ventura to play a game that really means something.”
The fusion could be drawn against MLS or United Soccer League opposition.
“it really depends on the luck of the draw,” said Shergill.

Fusion blank Seahorses, improve to a perfect 3-0
Thiago Rocha and Brent Whitfield combined to score for the third straight game and Bryan Hill again kept the opposition off the scoreboard as the Ventura County Fusion extended its season-opening winning streak to three matches with a 1-0 win over the Southern California Seahorses on Saturday night at Biola University.

Whitfield Named Player of the Week
Brent Whitfield of Ventura County has been named the first United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League Player of the Week for the 2010 season after recording five goals and an assist in a pair of wins for the Fusion. Whitfield began the month with a hat-trick in a 5-0 win against the Lancaster Rattlers. One week later he tallied two goals in a 3-0 win against the Ogden Outlaws.

Fusion blank Ogden in Opener, 3-0
The Ventura County Fusion celebrated a championship by flashing the type of performance that may lead to more silverware. Brent Whitfield and Thiago Rocha combined for all three goals as the Fusion celebrated its 2009 Premier Development League title by burying the visiting Ogden Outlaws, 3-0, in its home opener Saturday night at Buena High.

Ventura County is ready to play its first PDL game since Alfonso Motalgalvan’s dramatic rebound goal in second-half stoppage time gave the Fusion a 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire in the PDL final Aug. 8 at Buena High.

Ventura County Fusion preseason report
The 2009 USL Premier Development League Champion Ventura County Fusion are riding that wave of success through the PDL preseason. In their most recent exhibition match played on Saturday, March 27, the team took a 3-1 decision away from Cal State Northridge thanks to returning starter Danny Barrera’s hat-trick.
